Discover South Devon

If you wish to really discover South Devon and you enjoy beating a path through areas of outstanding beauty, unearthing remote beach shacks, farm shops, fishing villages and vineyards whilst lapping up the luxury of top-class hotels, then look no further: here, at Gourmet Safari Tours, we have developed authentic tours based on local artisan produce, fine wines, stunning landscapes and Devon’s cultural heritage.

Our safaris change with the seasons, celebrating what is fresh and available around our trails. For 2016, we gave developed four trails, each one unique and aimed at the luxury market. They are aimed at those who enjoy minimal activity but, at the same time, aspire to seek out all that is best in the Devon countryside and its food and wines whilst meandering around its estuaries taking in the glorious scenery that the area has to offer.

If the hypnotic sound of lapping waves, the sight of turquoise waters and sun-kissed beaches appeal; if you would appreciate being navigated along historic rivers bounded by dense forest whilst sipping on your own choice of refreshment sourced from one of our passionate suppliers, then you are just the right candidate to enjoy one of our safaris through South Devon.

Today’s lifestyle is frenetic. We have developed the opportunity for you to escape all that. Time it right and you could leave it all behind in late afternoon and be fine dining by evening in the company of a select group of like individuals. After dinner, you will be met by your tour guide and introduced to your fellow travellers, when we will tailor-make the itinerary to suit the group’s desires if they so wish. That may entail building in more time to spend relaxing with a glass of the local wines to more time exploring the landscape or just chilling on the boat with our guides ready to regale you with tales of Devon’s history or folklore, set in the landscape in which it actually took place.

Our summer safaris take advantage of the later evenings: Devon in a summer sunset is a special time. The day begins at 9.30am with coffee in the hotel lounge – after breakfast – and sets off to a relaxed start at 10am or thereabouts to meet the real people who work this land: the farmers, the fishermen, the vintners and the chefs – not forgetting, of course, the guides and skippers who will be looking after you all day – and to take full advantage of all that these passionate artisans produce.

The summer safaris end on the River Dart. The late summer evenings here can be glorious, exuding a tranquillity that almost belongs to an earlier age. This is a great opportunity to wind down from the day’s exertions – if being wined and dined counts under that category – to enjoy yet further tasting sensations culled from a day experiencing all that Devon has to offer.

If the weather is miserable we have contingency plans in place to ensure that you won’t be, but we will make every attempt to give you plenty of advance notice if we need to cancel a tour because of inclement weather and will work with you to reschedule your tour.

The safaris are planned for between 6 -12 people and run once a fortnight to access the best features of the backwaters and the right tides. This is a bespoke service that, subject to the tides, can operate on any day of the week when we can take you on any of our safaris or to any of the area’s spectacular features. Places are limited to preserve the exclusivity of the tours and can be all-inclusive using one of our recommended top class hotels unless you wish to arrange your own accommodation. For 2016 we are only running a handful of dates, so get in while the going is good. We value our customers’ experience: we want you to feel completely taken care of so that you want to come back with your friends and your holiday guests to enjoy even more of what Devon has to offer.

The tours were successfully piloted in the spring of 2015 and we are now ready to bring this area to life for you. You can easily access all of the departure locations by car and Torbay, Totnes and Dartmouth by train. If you use our recommended accommodation you can simply put your feet up and be completely car and care free, looking forward to a unique adventure laid on just for you.

Please visit specific departure locations for advertised dates and departure times or contact us to book your own bespoke tour.
